Matrimonial sites in New Zealand: what is actually here

An honest guide to finding a rishta from New Zealand in 2026: what the India-built sites show you from Auckland, the community routes, what to check before you pay, and where Rishta fits.

Search for a matrimonial site from New Zealand and Google will show you a dozen. Almost all of them are the same thing: a site built for India with a page generated for every New Zealand town, down to “Punjabi brides in Blenheim”. This guide is what you actually find behind those pages, written by people who run one of the sites, so read the last section knowing that. We do not name or link to the others; you have seen their names already, and nothing here depends on which one it is.

The India-built sites, from here

The large matrimonial sites, and the community sites that belong to the same groups, all work the same way from New Zealand. You create a profile; your city is a filter; the database is India’s.

How many people that leaves you is the question nobody answers up front, so we did. On 19 September 2026 our founder, logged in as a paying member of the largest of them, ran one ordinary search (Sikh, aged 18 to 26) and read the counts the site printed beside each country in its own filter rail: more than 2,000 in India, 51 in Australia, 8 in New Zealand. By country where the person grew up, it was 14 for Australia and 4 for New Zealand.

The rest of what you will meet is the published design of those sites: a free profile that cannot read replies or see contact details without paying; contact details sold as the product, with a monthly quota of phone numbers; interests that can be sent in bulk with one pre-written line; photos visible to every member by default, with a privacy setting you have to go and find; and, on the biggest, a consultant service that phones you. The reviews on the New Zealand and Australian app stores say the same things in angrier words, and we read 1,350 of them in October 2026 before building anything.

Those sites are built for a search in India, with the visa and the distance that implies. For someone who already lives here, they are a long way to go for eight profiles.

The Australian-run sites

A couple of smaller services are run from Australia and serve New Zealand because it is next door. They are a more relevant pool than the India-built sites and a much smaller one: when our founder looked in September 2026, the Punjabi one showed single figures for New Zealand. Between them you will meet checks done by text message and an admin’s say-so rather than an ID document, a fee charged to women as well as men, and in one case a public page listing everyone who has just joined, which is the opposite of what most families here want.

The community routes

For most New Zealand families the real matrimonial site is not a website at all.

The gurdwara, the mandir, the mosque, the parish. A word to the right aunty, a notice on the board, a granthi who knows every family. It works, and it has one cost: everyone knows you are looking, and everyone has an opinion about who you were seen talking to.

WhatsApp and Facebook groups. There are New Zealand Punjabi, Gujarati, Malayali and Fiji Indian groups where biodatas are posted, sometimes by the hundred. Nobody checks who posted them, photos are forwarded on, and a biodata posted in Auckland can be in Ludhiana by the evening. Treat anything posted in a group as public for ever.

A vichola in India. A professional matchmaker back home still arranges a large share of matches for families here, usually for a fee on both sides. The pool is India’s, and the first question about any match is the visa.

Family. The oldest route and still the most common. Its weakness is the same as its strength: the pool is the people your family knows.

The dating apps

The dating apps, including the ones aimed at the South Asian diaspora, have Indian New Zealanders on them, and some marriages have come out of them. They are built for dating, not for a family-led search; nobody is verified; and the reviews of the Indian-specific ones from Australia and New Zealand are mostly about how few people are actually there. Different tool, different job.

What to check before you pay anyone anything

  1. How many people are actually in New Zealand? If the site will not show you a count for your own search before you pay, assume the answer is small.
  2. Who checks that a profile is real? Phone and email checks prove a phone exists. An ID check with a live selfie proves a person does.
  3. What is public? Is there a gallery any member can scroll? Can a profile be found from Google? Can a photo be saved or forwarded?
  4. What does “contact” cost? If phone numbers are the paid product, the site has an interest in keeping you buying them.
  5. Can you cancel? Read the reviews about refunds before you read the ones about matches.
  6. Who answers when something goes wrong? A support email that replies, a person who reads new profiles, or a chatbot.

Where Rishta fits

We are new, we are small, and we are only for New Zealand and Australia, which is either the point or the problem depending on what you want. Every profile passes an ID check with a document and a live selfie before anyone can see it, and someone on our team reads each new profile on the day it goes live. There is no gallery: photos are private until she approves one person, and she decides who can find her at all. Contact details are never on a profile, at any price; messaging and calling happen inside the site. Every interest carries a personal message, so none can be sent in bulk. It is free for everyone who joins before 31 December 2026, and after that one price for women and men, with no quota of contacts to buy.

If you want the people who are actually here, and the ones who left the big sites because of the gallery and the phone calls, start with the page for your community and decide for yourself. Our own comparison with the big sites, with the counts the largest of them printed for a search from here, is the long version.
